While I think about designing my own clock (as I don’t currently own one, which is as good a reason as any to obtain/build a cool one), here are five more clocks (in no particular order) that – like Furni’s Neverend series – bring some major cool to your wall. Just don’t expect to be able to tell the time quickly.

Digimech clock – Duncan Shotton

Designed in 2008, Shotton’s Digimech clock uses vertical strips with what appear to be alien characters printed on. As the strips move according the passage of time, they slide into windows located on the clock’s body where the characters take on a recognisable form and show the time. Interestingly, the time is displayed in a way we would usually consider to be “digital”-looking, despite being obviously printed.

D/A Clock – Alvin Aronson

Continuing the theme of clocks that make us think digital even though they’re not, Alvin Aronson’s D/A Clock raises and lowers segments on it’s surface to display the time. The segments rise and fall with the passage of time, but the outward design of the clock is amazing in it’s simplicity.

Magnetic Tape Reel clock – pixelthis

The idea behind the Pink Manatee design and name came (oddly) from a fixation with recycling, so it’s only natural this list contains at least one product made by planet-protecting methods. Even without that reasoning, pixelthis’ clocks are made from the kind of junk most of us would throw out – old bicycle wheels, hard-drive discs and in this case, a reel of magnetic tape. This is cool no matter who you are.

The Pin Clock

Another non-digital clock with digital-looking numbers, the pill-shaped Pin Clock resembles the popular Pin Art toy we all loved at kids. With a face made of 3000 pins which move to display the time, The Pin Clock not only looks but sounds great and is possibly one of the most manly-looking tools to count down to 5pm with.

Voice Activated Alarm Clock – Moshi

Not the most unique looking clock, this thing’s cool comes from within; it is voice-controlled. Imagine being able to Snooze your alarm without having to move a muscle. You can even ask it the time and temperature so you know whether to slip into your thermals. Although if you’re anything like me, speech is close to impossible at 7am. As another plus side, Moshi’s Voice Activated Alarm Clock can play your iPod so you don’t have to wake up to some horrific buzzing – unless you’re into European dance.

Around Clock – Lexon

Different enough to get a double-take, but simple enough to tell the time at a glance, the Around Clock is a great example of Keeping It Simple, Stupid. The only problem here is that I feel a strange compulsion to time boiling eggs whenever I see it…

Steven Fry - super fly

I’ve you’ve not been subjected to the glorious animated offerings at Weebl’s Stuff now you’re most likely of the elderly persuasion or have been living under a rock for some time now. Steven Fry is one of Peabo’s latest Flash animations, loops seamlessly and is so catchy you’ll be coughing it up for weeks. Make sure to check out the rest, including old favourites like Kenya and of course Weebl & Bob.

Paul is an artist and pattern-designer with something of a flair for classic-looking work produced in a modern style with Biro and/or felt-tip pens. His work ranges from scrappy-looking illustrations to photo-realistic black and white drawings, sometimes with a few effective splashes of colour.

Either way, he will (in his own words) “make your eyes melt“. Check out more of Paul’s work on his website and his YouTube page.

In Asia’s first 3D-projection, Singapore’s Suntec City Towers 2 and 3 were turned into screens on the evenings of the 5th and 6th of May 2010. Familiar characters, huge numbers and – of course – cars covered the side of the buildings. attracting huge crowds before going viral on the Internet. Certainly not the first use of architecture and lighting in this way but it was a first in Asia and so well done that it had to be commented on.

Hands-down the best use of social media I’ve seen all year.
